Between them, Dr Smith and Dr Leibman have performed over two thousand laparoscopic weight loss operations and innumerable other laparoscopic procedures

Dr Smith and Dr Leibman are both Fellows of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. They have both done post fellowship training in Australia, the United States and United Kingdom in advanced upper gastrointestinal, laparoscopic and weight loss surgery. They are both affiliated with the University of Sydney’s Northern Clinical School and participate regularly in the education of medical students, resident doctors and surgeons in training at all levels.

Dr Smith and Dr Leibman have been together in practice for ten years. During that time they have established a well-respected oesophagogastric surgery unit. They have an experienced team to assist in their treatment of patients undergoing weight loss surgery, surgery for oesophagogastric cancer, and surgery for other upper gastrointestinal and general surgical diseases.

Dr Leibman is a Past Chair of the Younger Fellow’s Committee, and holds a position on the executive committee of the NSW State Branch of the College. He regularly represents the College of Surgeons on matters relating to surgical practice and surgeons throughout NSW and Australasia.

Dr Smith is past Chairman of the Sydney Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society, and founding Secretary of the Australia and New Zealand Gastro-Oesophageal Surgeons Society. 

Jennifer Goldstein
BSc (HonsPsych) M.A.P.S. Registered Psychologist 

Jennifer has accrued extensive experience in clinical practice in Australia and the US since graduating from the University of NSW. Specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Treatment (CBT), Jennifer’s skills are integral with helping patients deal with change prior to and post surgery. Working through a patient’s issues such as depression or anxiety, which often maintain negative eating behaviours, is a vital part of creating positive eating and lifestyle habits moving forward. Jennifer’s expertise enables her to do just that. Jennifer is a member of the Australian Psychological Society, a Medicare Provider and is registered with AHPRA. 

Nazy Zarshenas

Nazy believes that optimal nutrition is a pillar for a healthy lifestyle and the key for best long-term outcomes following your surgery. She is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian with over 10 years experience in Bariatric and Upper Gastrointestinal Oncology Surgery.

She has extensive clinical expertise in both acute and chronic care of bariatric surgical patients and has comprehensive understanding of your journey. She understands the surgeries as well as the nutrition care in achieving the best outcome for you post op.

Nazy is a pioneer in nutrition management and bariatric surgery. She is active in an academic role in both undergraduate and postgraduate supervision at the University of Wollongong. She has supervised many clinical and research students and has produced several peer-reviewed publications. Nazy regularly presents at national and international conferences and has received the National Award for her contributions by the Dietitians Association of Australia in 2016.

You will see Nazy before and after your surgery. She aims to provide dietetic counselling, improve your understanding of nutrition, supporting you in adjusting to your new life and achieving your goals.
